Background

Abjad Initiative for Education is a non-profit organization working to support access to quality education and strengthen educational systems in crisis-affected communities. As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance financial management and accountability, Abjad Initiative is seeking a qualified Financial Coordinator to join its team in Syria.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure full compliance with Abjad Initiative’s financial and procurement policies across all projects and activities.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable financial laws and regulations in Syria.
  • Support the preparation of project and activity budgets in coordination with the Operations Manager.
  • Track financial performance against approved budgets and recommend adjustments when required.
  • Prepare monthly and interim financial expenditure reports for projects.
  • Review purchase requests from project teams and support departments to ensure budget alignment.
  • Prepare periodic payment requests in coordination with the Operations Manager.
  • Review invoices and supporting financial documents submitted by suppliers and the logistics department.
  • Manage petty cash operations, ensuring accurate recording and proper documentation.
  • Conduct regular reconciliation of payable and receivable accounts.
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity status in Syria.
  • Prepare and organize financial documentation required by donors and partners.
  • Ensure accurate and complete archiving of financial records in both electronic and hard-copy formats.
  • Identify and assess financial risks and contribute to fraud prevention and mitigation measures.
  • Support internal and external audits and ensure follow-up on audit recommendations.
  • Ensure confidentiality, security, and backup of financial data and databases.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Financial Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of relevant experience in accounting or financial management.
  • Prior experience with non-profit or humanitarian organizations is an asset.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and Google Drive.
  • Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Good financial reporting and data analysis skills.
